Rural Transit Day Set to be Celebrated on July 16

On Thursday, July 16, 2026, communities across the country will recognize Rural Transit Day, an annual celebration highlighting the essential role rural and tribal public transportation plays in connecting people to critical destinations including jobs, healthcare, education, and shopping.

Rural transit systems serve as a vital lifeline for thousands of Missourians. From providing transportation for older adults and individuals with disabilities to connecting residents with employment opportunities and medical appointments, rural transit helps strengthen local economies and improve quality of life in communities of every size across the state.

Established in 2019 by the National Rural Transit Assistance Program (National RTAP), Rural Transit Day also recognizes the dedicated drivers, dispatchers, mechanics, administrators, and support staff who work every day to keep rural communities connected. The day encourages transit agencies, community partners, elected officials, and riders to celebrate the impact of rural transit while raising awareness of the unique opportunities and challenges these systems face.

Celebrate Rural Transit Day via RTAP Zoom Chat

As part of this year’s celebration, National RTAP will host a Rural Transit Day Zoom Chat on Thursday, July 16, from 1:00–2:00 p.m. CDT. The discussion will be moderated by National RTAP Review Board member John Andoh and Florida RTAP Project Manager Stephanie Lewis and will explore how rural transit agencies are recognizing challenges, developing innovative solutions, and sharing best practices from across the country. The Missouri Public Transit Association (MPTA) is proud to recognize the agencies and professionals who provide transportation throughout our state’s rural communities. Every day, these systems help residents maintain their independence, access essential services, and stay connected.

As we celebrate Rural Transit Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to thank the dedicated transit professionals who make these services possible and to learn more about the value rural transit brings to Missouri. Thank you!
