LTE: Missouri Transit Must Not Be Shortchanged

Letter to the Editor, St. Louis Post Dispatch, January 11, 2026

Public transit is vital to Missouri, whether you ride it or not. It ensures residents can get where they need to go while fueling billions in economic activity. Yet, the recent 42% cut in state transit funding has had serious consequences. While it is understood that the state is grappling with budgetary issues, the restoration of funding must be prioritized as Missouri legislators convene for the 2026 session. If not, it will cost more in the end.

Public transit delivers nearly 40 million rides a year. Missouri is the only state with rural transit in every county, and employment is the leading trip purpose. It is the sole means for mobility and connectivity for many. Service has been impacted. The health, mobility and economic vitality of Missouri residents and employers are at stake.

Currently, the state invests $6.7 million annually and is split among 30 providers. Per capita spending has dropped from $1.89 to $1.08, ranking among the lowest nationwide. State funding is critical because it provides matching dollars to secure federal funds for operations and capital projects.

Citizens for Modern Transit and the Missouri Public Transit Association strongly advocate restoring state transit funding. An additional $5 million in general revenue is needed to return the total state operating investment to $11.7 million. Let’s get transit back on track in 2026.
