KC Streetcar Ridership Grows Following Main Street Extension Opening

The KC Streetcar released new ridership data in December 2025 and the numbers show a clear upward trend in ridership following the October 24th opening of the Main Street Extension.

Despite poor weather during the extension’s opening weekend, nearly 35,000 passenger trips were recorded between October 24 and October 26 and the system logged 341,922 rides for the month, the highest monthly total in its history. This brought the 2025 year-to-date ridership to nearly 1.8 million trips, reflective of a 2.5x increase in ridership when comparing November 2025 to November 2024. The streetcar now accounts for about 30% of all transit trips in the Kansas City region, reflecting strong demand for its fare-free, frequent service along the expanded 5.7-mile route from the River Market to UMKC.

The KC Streetcar also reports the extension has reshaped travel patterns and operational needs. Following the Main Street Extension opening, average weekday ridership more than doubled, rising from roughly 4,000 to 10,000 trips per day, and weekend averages have similarly increased. Riders are now spread across the full corridor, with particularly high usage in midtown and the Plaza/UMKC areas, indicating strong demand for connections to neighborhoods, universities, workplaces, and entertainment districts. In response to the surge in demand, KC Streetcar service has expanded from 3 – 4 streetcars in rotation downtown to 7 – 8 streetcars, with up to 9 vehicles during peak periods to improve frequency and reliability.
