The Missouri Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Task Force has identified transportation as a critical component of individual’s journey to sobriety. Seeking out addiction treatment can mean medical appointments and parole officer meetings, and with some seeking treatment having suspended licenses, transportation options outside of a personal vehicle are crucial.
Joe Fahey, who previously sought out addiction treatment, credits a bus pass with giving him hope during a difficult time in his life. Access to transit allowed him to seek out the help he needed, as it does for so many others across Missouri.
Some suggestions made to the task force have included grant funding to transit providers to provide transit passes to those in treatment, rideshare vouchers, and even mobile care units which can bring treatment options to a community vs the individual having to travel for treatment. Legislation proposed by the task force in 2026 is expected to include a focus on transportation access for those in treatment for addiction.
