The Cape Girardeau County Transit Authority (CGCTA) proudly celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, marking a quarter-century of reliable transportation, community support, and a deep commitment to mobility throughout Cape Girardeau County.
CGCTA was established on June 15, 2000, by unanimous vote of the Cape Girardeau County Commission through Resolution 00-06, pursuant to Missouri Revised Statute 238.400, which authorizes first-class counties to form transit authorities. The initiative was driven by the need to expand access to healthcare, social services, and essential resources for residents across the county.
While limited transportation services existed before its formation, Resolution 00-06 marked the formal launch of a unified, countywide public transit system. The creation of CGCTA not only expanded and strengthened existing services but also enabled the pursuit of vital state and federal funding to sustain and grow operations.
“Reaching 25 years is an extraordinary milestone for CGCTA,” said Ginny Smith, Executive Director of CGCTA. “We’ve focused on being more than just a transportation provider—we are a vital connection to opportunity, independence, and well-being. Our mission has always been to connect people with the services and opportunities that support a better quality of life. Our progress over the past 25 years is a reflection of the dedication of our team and the trust of the community we serve.”
CGCTA’s services are designed to meet the physical, social, and psychological needs of the public—enhancing mobility, fostering independence, and promoting overall well-being. The Authority proudly serves everyone in the community, from seniors accessing medical appointments to individuals commuting to work or reaching vital services.
As CGCTA looks to the future, it remains committed to growing alongside the region’s needs—expanding service availability, improving the rider experience, and continuing to act as a dependable partner in public health, economic opportunity, and community connection.
