(KFVS) -A Missouri lawmaker wants to pass a bill that would allow Missourians to carry guns on to public transit, including buses and trains.

The bill's sponsor, Representative Ron Hicks says he felt unsafe riding the MetroLink train in St. Louis and wants all riders another tool to protect themselves.

Currently, weapons of any kind are not permitted on the transit system.

There are some concerns raised by state public transportation systems that it could do the opposite.

Some drivers who work for Cape County Public Transit said they wouldn't feel comfortable not knowing if the passengers were carrying a concealed weapon.

Others drivers say they feel the bill is fair.

“I wouldn't have a problem with it. Just for the simple fact that if I had my concealed carry I would want to be able to carry it also and I think they (riders) have just as much right as I do,” said Beth Boyer.

“The ability for the public at large to carry a weapon would make a safer community,” said Clyde Mullins.

Hundreds of riders rely on public transportation in Cape Girardeau County every day.

Some Missouri public transit systems argue a bill to allow guns on buses and trains takes away local control.

During the bill's first reading, some lobbyists said lawmakers should let locals to decide whether to permit guns.
