About this event
As part of Easter Seals Project ACTION’s 2010 training calendar, Don Kloehn, Senior Project Manager/Accessibility Specialist with Tindale-Oliver and Associates, will conduct a two-part training on the use of the “Toolkit for Assessing Bus Stop Accessibility and Safety”. This "how-to" manual provides guidelines for optimal bus stop design including a comprehensive assessment tool that addresses shelter design, lighting, security, pedestrian environment, signage, wayfinding, technology, urban/rural considerations and organizational collaboration.

Session description and event resources
This is a two-part, skill-building training event. In part one of this event on June 17, Don Kloehn will introduce the various sections of the toolkit and provide practical instruction on how to use it to assess bus stops in your community. He will also address ways in which this information might be used to improve accessibility and usability of the local transit system. Each participant will be given a “homework” assignment to go out during the next week and use the toolkit to assess a few bus stops, making notes on the checklist regarding aspects of the stops that are safe and accessible and ways in which each could be improved. The purpose of this assignment is to encourage direct application of the concepts Mr. Kloehn presented and to give participants the hands-on experience of using the tool.

The second part of this event on June 24, will allow participants to discuss their various experiences and to ask questions. Mr. Kloehn will address these questions and provide additional training on bus stop accessibility and safety.

The Toolkit for Assessing Bus Stop Accessibility and Safety can be downloaded for free from the ESPA store.
