When I first heard about the Missouri Transit Conference and that it was within walking distance of my school, I knew I wanted to attend, but I wasn’t able to have it sponsored by the company I was interning for. Luckily, after I reached out to Travis Wood, who helped put together the conference, and I answered a few questions, I was able to attend!
During the first day, I interacted with kind and knowledgeable people from many aspects of the transit industry, from bus seat manufacturers to AI-powered security camera contractors. I learned that wearing a full suit and tie was a bit excessive, which was a relief considering the sweltering heat outside.
I arrived early for the second day, enjoying a nice breakfast and much-needed coffee. I was fortunate enough to sit with Chuck Ferguson (KCATA) and Taulby Roach (BSD), who were both deeply knowledgeable and passionate about their respective agencies and imparted a wealth of wisdom to me. I heard from FTA leaders, toured an OATS office where I learned how technology was leading to better safety and lower insurance costs, and got a tour of Columbia’s bus maintenance facility.
Throughout both days of the conference, I heard from and conversed with incredibly experienced and enthusiastic people, and I was even invited to apply for internships!
Despite being the only student at the conference, the environment felt incredibly welcoming, and I look forward to attending future instances of the Missouri Transit Conference!
