On May 18, 2026, the KC Streetcar officially launched passenger service on the Riverfront Extension, a 0.7 mile extension of the existing streetcar system. Hundreds of community members, transit advocates and regional leaders gathered at the new Riverfront streetcar stop for a grand opening ceremony recognizing the partnerships and investments that helped bring the extension to life. Speakers included Mayor Quinton Lucas, Carrie Butler, Region 7 Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration, and various other stakeholders associated with the project.
The celebration continued throughout the afternoon at Berkley Riverfront Park with a free community picnic featuring live entertainment, food trucks, yard games and family-friendly activities. Attendees were able to take advantage of complimentary food truck vouchers offered during the event in addition to enjoying live music performances.
With the Riverfront Extension now fully operational, Kansas City area residents and visitors can enjoy expanded access to destinations along the streetcar route while experiencing the continued growth of public transit in the region.
