Cape Girardeau County Transit Authority Celebrates 25 Years of Service

On June 15, 2000, the Cape Girardeau County Commission unanimously agreed to pass Resolution 00-06 which authorized the formation of the Cape Girardeau County Transit Authority (CGCTA). Limited transportation services existed in the area before the creation of CGCTA. The creation of CGCTA represented a step forward in that it allowed for a countywide transit system under one authority. It also allowed for the pursuit of additional state and federal funds.

CGCTA transit services include both demand-response service and fixed-route service. Demand-response vehicles provide transit services in which individual passengers can request transportation from one specific location to another specific location at a certain time. Vehicles providing demand response service don’t follow a fixed route but rather travel throughout the community, transporting passengers according to their specific requests. CGCTA operates two bus routes within the City of Cape. These buses operate throughout the day and have been designed for transportation to specific locations such as hospitals, grocery stores, and shopping areas. They are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Additionally, ADA Complimentary Paratransit service is available to those living within 3/4 of a mile from a designated route that are unable to access the fixed route due to a disability.

On Friday, June 13, CGCTA staff, supporters, and riders gathered to celebrate 25 years of transit services in Cape Girardeau County. The 25th anniversary celebration was more than a recognition of years—it was a tribute to the impact public transit has had on the Cape Girardeau community. Over the past two and a half decades, CGCTA has helped ensure that residents of all ages and abilities have had access to vital destinations, contributing to independence, mobility, and quality of life. From students commuting to class to seniors accessing healthcare appointments, public transit has played a key role in keeping the community connected.

CGCTA continues looking forward to the future and exploring new opportunities to serve the public. One example is through their new partnership with Southeast Missouri State University. Effective at the start of the Fall 2025 academic semester, CGCTA will officially take over campus shuttle operations, building on its long-standing commitment to providing reliable, accessible public transportation in the region.

CGCTA is looking forward to continuing its mission of connecting people, places, and opportunities throughout Cape Girardeau County for many more decades.
