On the cusp of celebrating a half century of providing more than 500,000 individual rides to residents in Madison County, Southeast Missouri Transportation Service (SMTS), Inc was named June’s Business of the Month by Madison County, MO.
With 170 employees, SMTS, Inc. is the second largest rural transit provider in the nation. Missouri is the only state in the country with transit service in every county.
SMTS is funded in part by Federal Transit Administration 5311 grant dollars. These grant dollars must be matched with local funding, which includes state investment in transit.
In addition to transit service, SMTS staff frequently participate in local civic projects, events, boards of directors, and volunteer with human service organizations that help make a difference in the communities they serve.
