Federal Transit Administration (FTA) creates partnership to offer transit agencies assistance on Workforce Development

The International Transportation Learning Center (ITLC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving public transportation at the national level and within communities, will begin operating the Transit Workforce Center (TWC) in partnership with the FTA. The Center represents the FTA’s first ever national technical assistance center to help transit agencies recruit, hire, train, and retain a diverse workforce.

The TWC will support public transit agencies’ workforce development needs for all methods of public transit across urban and rural providers. The TWC will also work to address the national transit worker shortage. Through technical assistance activities to help develop frontline transit workers’ skills, recruiting workers to transit careers via apprenticeships, partnerships, and similar programs, the TWC hopes to make a measurable impact in this area.

The TWC will manage two programs:

  1. Conduct technical assistance activities within and for transit agencies that promote more effective and efficient training of frontline workers involved in public transportation maintenance and operations, which is needed to support transformations in public transportation services and assets.
  2. Implement technical assistance activities through collaborative partnerships between transit agency management and labor, including apprenticeships, thereby providing an opportunity to begin addressing social inequities that exist in public transit and creating diversity within and among the transit industry workforce.
