RideKC will be at highly used transit centers and bus stops next week, providing riders with thousands of free masks. Under the City of Kansas City, Mo.’s new order, face coverings will be required on RideKC buses and on KC Streetcar.
According to the City order, effective Monday, June 29, all employees or visitors to any place of public accommodation must wear face coverings in an area or while performing an activity which will involve close contact or proximity to co-workers or the public where six feet of separation is not feasible.
“Safety is our top priority at RideKC,” said Robbie Makinen, KCATA CEO. “This public health crisis has required flexibility and changes on the part of our riders and our operators. We recognize the important role everyone has in keeping one another safe and in keeping our community connected to opportunities.”
“Since the beginning of this COVID crisis, KCATA has implemented several creative strategies to keep bus riders, streetcar riders, and operators safe, while never interrupting service for those who need it most,” said Mayor Lucas. “By providing masks to all riders, KCATA once again has demonstrated its commitment to keeping all who utilize public transit safe. I appreciate their partnership as we work to keep our community healthy.”
RideKC has received thousands of masks from the Federal Transit Administration for distribution to customers. Research has shown that wearing a cloth mask or other face-covering helps prevent the spread of COVID-19, especially when social distancing may be difficult. These masks can help keep area residents and employees healthy.
RideKC will target high ridership routes and transit centers throughout the region with the reusable cotton masks.
