More than half of all bus riders in Kansas City, Kan., are expected to pass through a modern new MetroCenter center to be dedicated Friday at Seventh Street and Minnesota Avenue.
A 10 a.m. ceremony will include the unveiling of a refurbished, 18-foot street clock that once stood nearby in front of the Winkler jewelry store and was a fixture of downtown Kansas City, Kan.
Buses will begin using the new transit center next week. They will include the 101 route serving Minnesota and State Avenue and six others. Another new MetroCenter will be at 47th Street and State Avenue.
The transit centers are part of a $13 million collaboration between the Unified Government of Kansas City, Kan. and Wyandotte County and the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority.
The project included a $10.5 million grant from U.S. Department of Transportation. It will link the bus hub at 10th and Main streets in downtown Kansas City with Village West.
