JOB ANNOUNCEMENT FOR:
Director of Vehicle Maintenance

The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority is the regional transit authority and the largest public transit provider in the bi-state Kansas City metropolitan area.  The Authority is located in metropolitan Kansas City and has 850 full and part-time employees.  It is governed by a board of ten commissioners with legal representation from the Missouri and Kansas side of the metropolitan area.  The day-to-day operations of the Authority are headed by the General Manager. 

The Director of Maintenance holds an executive management position responsible for administering and managing all aspects of the Vehicle Maintenance Department, in accordance with Authority goals objectives and policy.  The Director oversees both the short and long term maintenance of all revenue and non-revenue vehicles; manages a total of 150 departmental staff composed of salaried employees and bargaining unit mechanics, service workers and hostlers; and directs the administration of the new equipment warranty program.  The essential job functions of this position include the strategic management of the maintenance department; providing day-to-day direction of the fleet, farebox and two-way radio maintenance operations and all vehicle maintenance activities in coordination with organizational needs, goals and standards; establishing operational procedures and policies to ensure cost-efficient, effective and safe departmental practices; and providing technical expertise in department procurements.

REQUIREMENTS:   This successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to successfully direct, motivate, train, and engage a diverse workforce in a union shop; strong verbal and written communication skills; possess a strong knowledge of transit regulatory and environmental requirements; have a demonstrated knowledge of principles, procedures, and policies related to vehicle maintenance and maintenance planning best practices; have experience with automated maintenance information systems, inventory systems, and purchasing practices along with an extensive knowledge of transportation operations.  In addition, the position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Business Administration, or related field, plus a minimum of ten(10) years of transit or diesel vehicle management experience at least three (3) of which are in a supervisory position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Certification in transit vehicle management is preferred.  Pay:  DOQ
