“Transit-Oriented Development” class in Kansas City, MO

The National Transit Institute will be sponsoring a “Transit-Oriented Development” class in Kansas City, MO May 6-7, 2010. 

The course is intended for transit agency planners and development specialists, State DOT planners and engineering, MPO staff, Federal employees (FTA, FHWA, FRA, HUD, DOL, DOE and others), city and county engineers and planners and consultants. The course is designed to help transportation and land use professionals who have a working knowledge of basic transportation, land use planning, transit planning, and operational concepts.

The course covers the planning, funding, and implementation of transit-oriented (TOD) and joint development projects that improve the environment, create a sense of community, and boost transit ridership.

Learning will focus on the relationship between land development and the transit system from a historical perspective to the present day policy environment. Participants will see how transit-oriented and joint development fit into Federal, State, and local transportation planning and also gain a better understanding of the Federal Transit Administration’s Joint Development process. 

As a result of this course participants should be able to explain how transit oriented and joint developments projects are planned, funded, financed and implemented at the regional/systems level, station area, and site scales.  Participants will also be able to recognize the importance of project management in ensuring successful implementation of TOD and joint development.
